I free-drew this in color pencil from a photograph that appeared in a Time magazine issue back in the early 1990s. It is of a dead child killed during a mortar attack in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the ethnic-cleansing wars occuring in the former Yugoslavia. It was such a striking image, starkly haunting, that I was moved to draw from it. It seems perverse to state that this is one of my "favorite" drawings, but it is in the sense that it's one of the first drawings I ever made which truly moved me as I was making it...and it still haunts me years later.
